Mini Biography:
Brian Bennett was, by the late 1950s, one of the most sought-after percussionists around. He was drummer in residence at the legendary '2 Is' in Soho and a regular on Jack Good's ground breaking TV show Oh Boy. In 1961, he was invited to join Cliff Richard and The Shadows and wrote many of the hit songs from the films, including "Summer Holiday"(for which he won his first Ivor Novello award), "Wonderful Life" and "Finders Keepers". In the 1970s, he became Cliff Richard's musical director and formed The Brian Bennett Orchestra touring the world including the first concerts to be staged in Russia. By the mid 1970s, Brian was in demand as an arranger, conductor and record producer and had already started composing for film and television. During the 1980s, he was awarded his second Novello award (for 25 years services to music) and was busy writing and recording music for a wide range of programmes including "Dallas", "Knotts Landing", "Pulaski", "The Royal Wedding", "BBC Golf" theme, "The Sweeney", "The American Way" and "Terminal Choice". In 1990, he won his third Ivor Novello award for Best Score For A Television Series ("The Ruth Rendell Mysteries"). His commissions from the 1990s to 2000 includes the long-running series "The Knock", "Nomads of the Wind", "Global Sunrise", "The Harpist", "David Jason In His Element", "Living Britain" and "Dirty Work". In 2001, he received the Gold Badge Award by the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters Society. He also won the Royal Television Society Craft & Design Awards 2000/2001 for Best Original Title Music for "Murder In Mind". 1997年製作のドイツ＝イギリス合作映画（ドイツ語題名は「Die Harfenspielerin」／日本では劇場未公開でビデオのみ発売済）。監督はハンスヨルグ・ツーリン。出演はジェラルディン・オロウ、クリスティアン・アンホルト、スティーブン・マッギャン、B・J・ホッグ、ジョン・キャヴァナー、コリン・ベイカー、ジーン・アンダーソン、アラン・バーカー、ロバート・ベック、マイケル・ビッブ、デニー・ケイン、デヴィッド・イースター他。脚本はフィル・オシーアとハンスヨルグ・ツーリン。撮影はジェリー・ライヴリーとハンスヨルグ・ツーリン。バルト海の小さな島に住む青年フェルディナンド（アンホルト）は、コンサートのために島にやって来たアイルランド人のハープ奏者レベッカ（オロウ）にひと目ぼれし、なんとかして彼女に近づこうとする。そこに現れた謎の男ヘンリー（マッギャン）は、フェルディナンドがレベッカの気を引くための手助けをするが、彼には全く別の意図があった……。
音楽は、イギリスのバンド「シャドウズ」のドラム奏者として知られ、1970年代以降TVシリーズのスコアを中心に手がけているブライアン・ベネットが作曲。日本でも知られている作品には、女流ミステリ作家ルース・レンデル原作のTVシリーズ「ウェクスフォード警部シリーズ」のスコアがある。この「（未公開）ハーピスト／死を奏でる女」は、ハープ奏者を主人公にしたサスペンス映画で、ハーピストのスカイラ・カンガ（Skaila Kanga）によるハープのソロをフィーチャーした曲を効果的に挿入している。また、ブライアン・ベネット自身も指揮者として映画本編にカメオ出演している。「Escape from the Asylum」は、サスペンスフルなオープニング。「Prelude No.1 by Bach」は、バッハのプレリュードのハープ演奏。「At First Sight」「Following Rebecca」はセンチメンタルなタッチ。「The River」はジェントルな曲。「The Concert - Music for Harp & Orchestra」は、コンサートのシーンでのオーケストラとハープによる躍動的な曲。「Meeting Rebecca」「Secrets」「The Hidden Eye」「Bad Blood」「Dark Shadow」「The Hidden Truth」「The Dark Side of Love」「The Barn」等は不吉なサスペンス音楽の連続。「View from the Heart」は、ハープのソロによるジェントルな曲。「Cathedral」もハープをフィーチャーしたサスペンス曲。「A Quiet Kill」は激しいサスペンス。「The Harpist - End Titles "Pavane for Harp"」は、センチメンタルで美しいハープによるエンドタイトル。
