At age 16, after several years of composing, Gary Guttman was awarded the Orchestration Scholarship at Chautauqua Institution in New York. One year later at Ithaca College, he commenced his four year studies with Pulitzer Prize winning composer Karel Husa. Soon after graduation, he was invited out to Los Angeles by acclaimed jazz musician Tom Scott. A few months after arriving in L.A., he started playing keyboards for the pop group Missing Persons and can be heard on their hits Destination Unknown and Mental Hopscotch. Shortly after leaving Missing Persons, he started work at Landmark Entertainment Group in Hollywood where he spent almost two decades as their senior staff composer. Some of his work for Landmark included the scores to the futuristic sci-fi television series "Captain Power", the IMAX film "Race for Atlantis" and the themed attraction "James Bond 007: License to Thrill" for MGM. After leaving Landmark Entertainment, he began his freelance career where he added shows such as "20/20", "The Today Show" and "Primetime" to his list of credits. He co-created the groundbreaking software Secret Composer which teaches musicians how to compose in the style of film and TV soundtracks. He has written music for CBS, NBC, ABC, Universal Studios, Warner Bros, IMAX Films, Caesar’s Palace Las Vegas and Sesame Street, among others. His music has been performed by some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Seattle Symphony.

1987〜1988年製作のアメリカのテレビシリーズ（30分×22話／日本ではビデオ発売済み）。製作は「類猿人ターザン」(1981)の脚本や「マスターズ／超空の覇者」(1987)の監督を手がけたゲイリー・ゴダード。監督はオッタ・ハヌス、ホルヘ・モンテシ、ダグラス・ウィリアムス、マリオ・アッツォパルディが各話を担当。出演はティム・ダニガン、ピーター・マクニール、スヴェン＝オレ・ソーセン、モーリス・ディーン・ウィント、ジェシカ・スティーン、デヴィッド・ヘンブレン、ブラッド・クランドール、デリック・ヘイゼル、テッド・ディロン、ジョン・S・デイヴィス、ブルース・グレイ、ドン・フランクス他。脚本はゲイリー・ゴダード、J・マイケル・ストラジンスキー、ローレンス・G・ディティリオ、マーク・スコット・ジクリー、マイケル・リーヴス、クリスティ・マークス、トニー・クリストファー、ジェリー・デイヴィスが各話を担当。撮影はピーター・ベニソン。玩具大手のマテルが製作に参画しており、テレビの映像と連動して遊べるインタラクティブ・トイを展開した戦隊アクション・シリーズ。2147年、戦闘用機械軍団バイオ・ドレッドが人類に反乱を起こし、地球は制圧されてしまった。父の天才科学者パワー博士から強化スーツを遺されたジョナサン・パワー（ダニガン）は、空を飛べる参謀役“ホーク”（マクニール）、重火器装備の“タンク”（ソーセン）、ホログラフィで変身できる情報将校“スカウト”（ウィント）、メカニック担当の“パイロット”（スティーン）たちと共にドレッド軍団に立ち向かう。

音楽はテレビシリーズやアトラクション映像の音楽を中心に手がけているゲイリー・ガットマンが作曲。「Captain Power Opening」は、ダイナミックでヒロイックな主題にブラッド・クランドールによるナレーションがかぶさるオープニング。「Get Ready」「Bursting Through」「Soaron」「Captain Power Vamp」等は、ダイナミックで躍動的な曲。「Love Theme」は、ジェントルで大らかなラヴ・テーマ。「Big Battle」「Pursued」「Air Battle」「Pursued Vamp」「Land Battle」「Triumphant Battle」等は、オーケストラによるビジーなアクション音楽。「Sad Heroic Vamp」「Sad Heroic」等は、ストイックなタッチの曲。「Abandoned Streets」「Castle Volcania 2」は、不吉なサスペンス音楽。「Eerie Mood」「Dark Mist」は、ミステリアスなタッチ。「Sneaking Around」「Second Ticking」は、ダークなサスペンス音楽。「Eden 2」「Serious - Somber」は、幻想的なタッチ。「Power On - Alternate」「Captain Power to the Rescue」は、ヒロイックなアクション音楽。「Quiet Buildup Alternate」は、ダークでミリタリスティックなタッチ。「Captain Power End Title」は、ビジーでダイナミックなエンドタイトル。「Flame Street」は、シンセサイザーによるビジーなアクション音楽。「Captain Power Opening 2012 Version」は、作曲者自らメインテーマを新しくアレンジしたバージョン。映像が編集される前に様々なシーンを想定して作曲されたスコアで、スポッティングがしやすいように短い曲が主体となっている。ヒロイックでキャッチーな主題がテレビシリーズらしくて楽しい。
これは25周年を記念して発売されたDVDと併せてリリースされたサントラCDで、作品の公式サイト（http://captainpowerreturns.net/soundtrack.html）で購入できる。
