Mini Biography:
Stephen Michael Harding Oliver was one of the foremost British composers of opera and music theatre of his generation. He was educated at St.Paul's Cathedral, Ardingly College and Worcester College, Oxford, studying music under Kenneth Leighton and Robert Sherlaw Johnson. He was a prolific composer of some fifty operas, ranging from mini-operas for children to major works for professional opera companies; his first, "The Duchess of Malfi"(1971), was staged while he was still studying at Oxford. He also wrote substantial incidental music for the Royal Shakespeare Company (including the epic "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby" directed by Trevor Nunn) and the BBC (including his memorable music for the thirteen-hour dramatization of Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" for BBC Radio 4 in 1981). His musical written with Tim Rice, "Blondel", enjoyed a measure of success, but it will be for his operas that Stephen Oliver will be best remembered, including "Tom Jones"(1975), "Beauty and the Beast"(1984) and "Timon of Athens"(1991). He also wrote music for television, including several of the BBC's Shakespeare productions, and some chamber and instrumental music. His list of works totals over four hundred compositions, including a great number of choral items for both church and concert - all created in the forty-two years of his all-too-brief life. His maternal great-grandfather was William Boyd Carpenter(1841-1918), a Bishop of Ripon and a court chaplain to Queen Victoria.

1986年製作のイギリス映画（日本では劇場未公開でビデオ発売済）。監督はロイヤル・シェイクスピア・カンパニーやロイヤル・ナショナル・シアターにおける著名な舞台演出家で、映画「十二夜」(1996)等の監督も手がけているトレヴァー・ナン（1940〜）。出演はヘレナ・ボナム＝カーター、ケイリー・エルウェズ、ジョン・ウッド、マイケル・ホーダーン、ジル・ベネット、ジェーン・ラポテア、サラ・ケステルマン、パトリック・ステュワート、ウォーレン・セアー、ジョス・アックランド、イアン・ホッグ、リー・モンターニュ、リチャード・ヴァーノン、リチャード・ジョンソン、ガイ・ヘンリー他。「赤い影」(1973)「ピラミッド」(1980)「（TV）風に向かって」(1991)等の脚本を手がけたクリス・ブライアントの原案を基にクリス・ブライアントとデヴィッド・エドガーが脚本を執筆。撮影は「冬のライオン」(1968)「ジーザス・クライスト・スーパースター」(1973)「レイダース／失われたアーク《聖櫃》」(1981)「ネバーセイ・ネバーアゲイン」(1983)等のダグラス・スローカム（1913〜2016）と「（未公開）ロストユニバース／魔宮伝説からの脱出」(1983)等のデレク・V・ブラウン。製作は「アントニーとクレオパトラ」(1971)「ウィッカーマン」(1973)「オーロラ殺人事件」(1979)「死にゆく者への祈り」(1987)等のピーター・スネル（1941〜）。王位継承ををめぐる策略の中で、9日間だけ女王となった少女レディ・ジェーン・グレイとその夫の短くも波乱に満ちた生涯を描く歴史ドラマ。16世紀中頃、チューダー王朝の英国。ヘンリー八世の跡を継いだエドワード六世（セアー）の下で摂政として実権を握るジョン・ダドリー卿（ウッド）は、病弱なエドワード六世の死後も自らの地位を盤石なものとするため、ヘンリー八世の妹の孫娘で15歳のジェーン・グレイ（ボナム＝カーター）と自分の放蕩息子ギルフォード（エルウェズ）とを結婚させ、彼女の王位継承を仕組むが……。出演者のウッド、ホーダーン、ステュワート、ケステルマン等や脚本家のデヴィッド・エドガーは、いずれもロイヤル・シェイクスピア・カンパニーのメンバー。ギルフォード・ダドリーを演じたケイリー・エルウェズは、実在のギルフォードとジェーン・グレイの子孫に当たるらしい。

音楽は数多くのオペラや舞台音楽を手がけたイギリスの作曲家スティーヴン・オリヴァー（1950〜1992）で、この「（未公開）レディ・ジェーン／愛と運命のふたり」は42歳で他界したオリヴァーの唯一の劇場映画スコア。公開当時、オリヴァー自身がサントラ盤のリリースを準備したが、映画が興行的に失敗したためリリースはキャンセルされてしまった。今回のアルバムはCD2枚組となっており、1枚目にコンプリートスコア、2枚目に公開当時に計画されていたサントラ盤のアッセンブリーを収録。CD1枚目の冒頭「The Hunt」は、ファンファーレに続いてヒロイックで躍動的なメインの主題が展開する曲。このメインの主題は「“I Will not Marry Him” / Persuasion With a Whip」「Edward Comforts Jane / Edward Collapses」等でも登場する。「Young Jane」「Jane and Edward on the River Bank / Jane Visits Mary」は、ジェントルなタッチの曲。「The Wedding」は、躍動的で華麗なタッチ。「The Priory / Guilford's Apology」は、メインの主題からジェントルで大らかなラヴテーマへと展開。このラヴテーマは、「“When Did You Know?” / “I Was the First”」「Long Live Queen Jane」「Sentencing / Eternity」「The Final Days」でも繰り返され、更に「Love」では大らかで荘厳なコーラス曲として、「Queen Jane / The Shilling」ではコーラスを織り込んだ明るく快活なタッチで展開。「The Coronation」は、荘厳なコーラス曲。「The Army」「Queen Mary's Procession」は、ミリタリスティックなファンファーレ。「The Rebellion and Arrest」は、ダイナミックでヒロイックな主題から、ラヴテーマ、サスペンス音楽へと展開。「“We're Here Together”」は、ラヴテーマから後半躍動的なサスペンス音楽へ。ラストの「Queen Mary」は、コーラスを織り込んだラヴテーマで締めくくる。最後にソース音楽として宮廷音楽6曲「The Saltarello」「The Passamezzo」「Fife and Drum」「Never Had Man」「Flowers of May」「The Married Couple」を収録。

CD2枚目はスコアのダイジェストとなっており、内容は1枚目と重複するが、収録曲は以下の通り。

明快な主題をベースにしており、イギリスの作曲家らしい気品を感じさせるドラマティックなオーケストラルスコア。

スティーヴン・オリヴァーは、50作品ほどのオペラや、ロイヤル・シェイクスピア・カンパニーの舞台音楽、BBC放送のシェイクスピア作品のスコア、合唱曲、室内音楽等を手がけており、上述の通り劇場用映画のスコアはこの「（未公開）レディ・ジェーン／愛と運命のふたり」のみとなっている。彼のスコアは過去に殆どアルバム化されておらず、BBCの13時間におよぶラジオドラマ「指輪物語（The Lord of the Rings）」（1981／英BBC Worldwide Music Production）や、TVミニシリーズ「（未公開/TV）The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby」（1982／仏Jay Productions、英That's Entertainment、米DRG Records）等がLP/CDでリリースされているだけなので、今回の「（未公開）レディ・ジェーン／愛と運命のふたり」のCD化は貴重なリリースと言える。コンプリート・スコアの初リリースで、1,000枚限定プレス。
