Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Philip Morris Glass worked in his father's radio store and discovered music listening to the offbeat Western classical records customers didn't seem to want. He studied the violin and flute, and obtained early admission to the University of Chicago. After graduating in mathematics and philosophy, he went to New York's Juilliard school, drove a cab, and studied composition with Darius Milhaud and others. At 23, he moved to Paris to study under the legendary Nadia Boulanger, who taught almost all of the major Western classical composers of the 20th century. While there, he discovered Indian classical music while transcribing the works of Ravi Shankar into Western musical notation for a French filmmaker. A creative turning point, Glass researched non-Western music in India and parts of Africa, and applied the techniques to his own composition. Back in the United States, Glass spent the late 1960s and early 1970s driving a taxi cab in New York and creating a major collection of new music. In 1976, his landmark opera "Einstein on the Beach" was staged by Robert Wilson to a baffling variety of reviews. His compositions were so avant-garde that he had to form the Philip Glass Ensemble to give them a venue for performance. Although called a minimalist by the Western classical mainstream, he denies this categorization. His major works include opera, theater pieces, dance, and song. His work in film, beginning with "Koyaanisqatsi" (1982), gave filmmakers such as Godfrey Reggio and Errol Morris a new venue of expression through the documentary form. His many recordings have also widened his audience. He was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera to compose "The Voyage" for the Columbus quinquacentennial in 1992. In 1996, he composed original music for the Atlanta Olympic Games, which, perhaps, made Glass almost mainstream.

• MISHIMA  MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS

1985年製作のアメリカ＝日本合作映画（日本では第38回東京国際映画祭で三島由紀夫生誕100年を記念する特集上映の1本として2025年10月30日、11月8日、11月9日に日本初上映）。監督は「ザ・ヤクザ」(1974)「タクシードライバー」(1976)「愛のメモリー」(1976)「ローリング・サンダー」(1977)「レイジング・ブル」(1980)「最後の誘惑」(1988)等の脚本や、「ハードコアの夜」(1979)「アメリカン・ジゴロ」(1980)「キャット・ピープル」(1982)「愛と栄光への日々／ライト・オブ・デイ」(1986)「白い刻印」(1998)「魂のゆくえ」(2017)等の監督で知られるポール・シュレイダー（1946〜）。出演は緒形拳、沢田研二、坂東八十助、永島敏行、三上博史、大谷直子、佐藤浩市、萬田久子、池部良、左幸子、笠智衆、利重剛、加藤治子、徳井優、織本順吉、江角英明、沖直美、高倉美貴、烏丸せつこ、倉田保昭、横尾忠則、李麗仙、平田満、誠直也、勝野洋、根上淳、他（英語版のナレーションはロイ・シャイダー）。脚本はポール・シュレイダー、レナード・シュレイダーとチエコ・シュレイダー。撮影はジョン・ベイリーと栗田豊通。プロダクションデザインは石岡瑛子。プロデューサーは山本又一朗とトム・ラディ。アソシエイト・プロデューサーはアラン・プール、レナード・シュレイダーとチエコ・シュレイダー。製作総指揮はフランシス・フォード・コッポラとジョージ・ルーカス。

小説家・三島由紀夫（1925〜1970）の生涯を、彼の小説を映像化した劇中劇を交えて描いた独特の構成の作品で、緒形拳が三島を演じている。第1部「美（beauty）」では三島の小説『金閣寺（Temple of the Golden Pavilion）』、第2部「芸術（art）」では同『鏡子の家（Kyoko's House）』、第3部「行動（action）」では同『奔馬（Runaway Horses）』を映像化し、これに陸上自衛隊市ヶ谷駐屯地で三島が自決した当日の経過を追った「1970年11月25日」と、三島の幼少期から「楯の会」結成までの半生を描いた「フラッシュバック（回想）」を交えて展開する。最後の第4部「文武両道（harmony of pen and sword）」では、前3部のシークエンスが交錯する形で結末を迎える。1985年度第38回カンヌ国際映画祭で最優秀芸術貢献賞を受賞。日本では「MISHIMA -- 11月25日・快晴」の邦題で公開予定だったが、諸事情により公開は見送られた。

音楽はミニマル・ミュージックの旗手として知られ、交響曲、協奏曲、室内楽、オペラ等の他に「コヤニスカッツィ」(1983)「キャンディマン」(1992)「クンドゥン」(1997)「トゥルーマン・ショー」(1998)「めぐりあう時間たち」(2002)等の映画音楽も手がけているアメリカの作曲家フィリップ・グラス（1937〜）。

「Mishima / Opening」は、静かなイントロから躍動的でダイナミックな主題へ展開するオープニング。「November 25: Morning」「November 25: Ichigaya」は、ミリタリスティックでダイナミックかつドラマティックな曲。「1934: Grandmother & Kimitake」「Temple Of The Golden Pavilion ("Like Some Enormous Music")」「1937: Saint Sebastian」は、ストリングスによる静かにメランコリックなタッチの曲。「Osamu's Theme: Kyoko's House」は、エレクトリック・ギターをフィーチャーしたリズミックな曲。「Kyoko's House ("Stage Blood Is Not Enough")」は、ジェントルで幻想的なタッチの曲。「1957: Award Montage」「F-104: Epilogue From Sun And Steel」「Mishima / Closing」は、静かにドラマティックなタッチ。「Runaway Horses ("Poetry Written With A Splash Of Blood")」「1962: Body Building」「November 25: The Last Day」は、躍動的でドラマティックなタッチの曲。

フィリップ・グラスは、メリーランド州ボルチモアのリトアニア系ユダヤ系一家に生まれ、子供のころからピーボディ音楽院でフルートを習った。15歳でシカゴ大学に入学し、卒業後にジュリアード音楽院に進み、主に鍵盤楽器を弾くようになる。その後、フランスでナディア・ブーランジェに師事し、ラヴィ・シャンカールとともに働いたのち、主に宗教的な動機から北インドへ旅行し、チベット難民と出会った。1967年にアメリカに帰国し、ニューヨークでタクシー運転手をしながらシャンカールとともに仕事をし、インド音楽の徹底して加算的なリズムに影響を受け、簡素で禁欲的な作品を書きはじめる。「フィリップ・グラス・アンサンブル」を結成し、主に画廊で演奏活動を行う。1972年に仏教徒となり、ダライ・ラマ14世に面会。チベット問題に強い関心を持ち、チベット難民を強力に支援している。

フィリップ・グラスは、1997年の「クンドゥン」、2002年の「めぐりあう時間たち」、2006年の「あるスキャンダルの覚え書き」でアカデミー賞の音楽賞(オリジナルドラマ)／作曲賞にノミネートされ、1998年の「トゥルーマン・ショー」でゴールデン・グローブの音楽賞、1983年の「コヤニスカッティ」、1997年の「クンドゥン」でLA批評家協会賞の音楽賞、2002年の「めぐりあう時間たち」で英国アカデミー賞の作曲賞（アンソニー・アスキス映画音楽賞）を受賞している。
