Mini Biography:
Theodorakis fought during WW2 and was captured at the city of Tripoli. He was tortured, but after being set free, he joined the partisan army of Greece named EAM (National Liberating Movement). He took part in the civil war in Greece during 1945-1949, always with the Left parties of Greece. He was exiled for the first time to the island of Ikaria in 1947, then, was transferred to the island of Makronisos in 1948. In 1954 he moved to Paris in order to continue his studies in music. He composed continuously during the following years in order to express the people of Greece. After Lamprakis, a Parliamentary representative, was murdered, Theodorakis became himself a member of the Parliament and the number one enemy of the Right parties of Greece. The military dictatorship by Papadopoulos, who took power in 1967, decided that Theodorakis was not 'welcome' in his own country, and he was exiled one more time. He came back in 1974, but stayed only for 6 years, went back to Paris and finished his third big work "Canto General" based on the poems of the Nobel winner poet Odysseas Elitis. During the 80s he became a member of the Parliament again and caused controversy in the beginning of the 90s, when he collaborated with the Right party's prime minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis. In 1992 he composed "Canto Olympico" for the Olympic Games of Barcelona. He also composed another opera of "Lysistrath" for the Olympic Games of Athens in 2004.

1962年製作のフランス＝イタリア合作映画（フランス語題名は「LE COUTEAU DANS LA PLAIE」／イタリア語題名は「IL COLTELLO NELLA PIAGA」）。製作・監督は「追想」(1956)「さよならをもう一度」(1961)「将軍たちの夜」(1966)「殺意の週末」(1970)等のアナトール・リトヴァク。出演はソフィア・ローレン、アンソニー・パーキンス、ギグ・ヤング、ジャン＝ピエール・オーモン、ヨランド・ターナー、トミー・ノーデン、マチルド・カサデスス、ビリー・キアンズ、バーバラ・ニコット、ルイ・ファラヴィーニャ、エリナ・ラブールデット、レジーヌ、ギイ・ラロッシュ他。アンドレ・ヴェルシーニの原案を基にピーター・ヴィアテル、ヒュー・ウィーラーとモーリス・ドリュオンが脚本を執筆。撮影はアンリ・アルカン。飛行機の墜落事故で唯一生き残った男ロバート・マックリン（パーキンス）は、自分は死んだことにして妻のリサ（ローレン）の元へと戻り、妻と共謀して保険金を騙し取ろうとするが……。
音楽は「Z」(1969)「セルピコ」(1973)「戒厳令」(1973)等で知られるギリシャの名作曲家ミキス・テオドラキス。この「真夜中へ5哩」は、彼が映画音楽作曲家としてのキャリアの初期に手がけたマイナーなスリラー映画で、後の彼の作風とは異なる、ジャズをベースにしたストレートなサスペンス音楽となっている。「Main Title」は、クールなジャズによるメイン・タイトルで、これを聞いて作曲したのがテオドラキスだと判る人は少ないだろう。その後も「Airport」「The Ghost - Part 1」「The Ghost - Part 2」「Concorde」「Cornice」「Police Consulat」「Registered Letter」等、オーケストラとジャズによるオーソドックスなサスペンス音楽が連続する。「The Crime」等はややアブストラクトなタッチ。ちょっと珍しいスコア。
また、この映画には、フランスのジャズ・ピアニストで映画音楽も作曲しているジャック・ルーシエが追加音楽を提供しているが、全てジャズのソース音楽で、このアルバムには「Boulevard Blues」「Baion」「Up There」「Surprise Blues」「South American Potpourri」「Paganini Twist」「Polka in White」「Bistrot」「Polka Twist」の9曲が収録されている。更にジュゼッペ・メンゴッツィが「Twistin' the Twist」、ジョルジュ・オーリックが「Potpourri at Regine's」を作曲しているが、アコーディオンをフィーチャーした後者はいかにもオーリックらしい曲。
