ウォルター・シャーフは、ジェリー・ルイス主演の一連のコメディ映画（“底抜け”シリーズ）等の音楽で知られる作曲家だが、ネズミの大群による襲撃を描いたスリラー「ベン」の主題歌（少年時代のマイケル・ジャクソンが歌った）で1972年度ゴールデン・グローブの歌曲賞を受賞している。また、ジャック＝イヴ・クストーのTVドキュメンタリー「（TV）The
Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau」のスコアで1970年と1974年に2回エミー賞を受賞しており、1971年のクイーン・メリー号上でのクストー美術館展示用に管弦楽曲「生きている海の伝説（The
Legend of the Living Sea）」を作曲している。クラシック音楽の分野では1945年に「パレスチナ組曲（The
Palestine Suite）」を作曲し、ハリウッド・ボウルでレオポルド・ストコフスキーの指揮により初演された。1980年代以降本格的にクラシック音楽に復帰し、「木はまだ立っている（The
