Natale Massara was sent to study the clarinet with the conductor of the local philharmonic band at the age of 6. He studied at Milan's Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi. In 1959, he auditioned to join the accompanying band of Adriano Celentano, a fledgling rock-n-roll singer. In the following decade, he advanced his music knowledge by studying the piano as well as composition and conducting with conservatory professors, most notably Bruno Bettinelli (composition), Franco Ferrara, and Carlo Savina (conducting). He was a staff arranger for 12 years (1968-1980) for Dischi Ricordi and he worked with the label's groups, such as Dik Dik and Equipe 84, and with solo singers as well, including Wilma Goich, Roberto Soffici, Mina, and Adriano Celentano. Between 1969 and 1977, he conducted the orchestra in 7 editions of the San Remo Festival, accompanying Antoine, Donatello, Milva, Wess & Dori Ghezzi, and Rettore. In 1972, when he was 29, he made his debut as a film composer, writing the score to "Treasure Island", an international co-production starring Orson Welles in the role of Long John Silver. The music was recorded with the Scala Theatre Orchestra. In 1976, he wrote the arrangements to "Certe volte…", a solo album by Pino Donaggio, his former fellow-student at the Verdi Conservatoire in Milan. In that same year, Donaggio called on Massara to arrange and conduct his score to Brian De Palma's horror movie "Carrie", which was a huge box-office hit. It cemented Donaggio's reputation as a composer for horrors and thrillers for years to come, and from that moment on, Massara conducted practically all of Donaggio's film scores, including "Dressed to Kill"(1980), "The Howling"(1981), "Blow Out"(1981), "Trauma"(1993), "Do You Like Hitchcock"(2005) and "Passion"(2012). In the second half of the 1970s, Massara continued to work as an arranger and producer for some of Italy's most high-profile entertainment singers, including Gianna Nannini and Milva. He also composed his own film music for Italian productions, including "Da grande"(1987), "La cintura"(1989) and "Graffiante desiderio"(1993). In 1988, he was commissioned to re-arrange the music to the 1960s film classic "La ciociara"; which was reworked into a television mini-series, in which Sophia Loren once again played the main part. The invitation to work on the remake came from the composer of the original film, Armando Trovajoli. For television, Massara composed the music to several miniseries including "Il coraggio di Anna"(1992), "Delitti privati"(1993) and "La memoria e il perdono"(2001), working with directors Giorgio Capitani and Sergio Martino. He also wrote the scores to 65 sequels of "Secrets", a soap opera aired on RAI2 in 1993, as well as countless jingles and melodies for TV commercials. Apart from his work for cinema and television, he also composed and arranged the music to two animated films for children as well as music for various theatre shows. In 2019, at the Canto Italiano gala in Milan, he was honoured with a lifetime achievement award by the Italian Union of Composers, Librettists, and Lyricists (UNCLA); the honour of handing out the prize was bestowed on none other than Pino Donaggio.

1972年製作のイギリス＝フランス＝イタリア＝西ドイツ＝スペイン合作映画（日本公開は1974年11月／ビデオ発売時の邦題は「オーソン・ウェルズ in 宝島」）。監督は「小さな目撃者」(1970)「ドラキュラ血のしたたり」(1971)「ヘルハウス」(1973)「ダーティ・メリー／クレイジー・ラリー」(1974)「ブラス・ターゲット」(1978)「（未公開）ビグルス・時空を越えた戦士」(1985)「（未公開）サイコパス」(2002)等のジョン・ハフ（1941〜）。出演はオーソン・ウェルズ、キム・バーフィールド、ライオネル・スタンダー、ウォルター・スレザック、アンジェル・デル・ポーゾ、リク・バッタリア、マリア・ローム、ポール・ミューラー、ミシェル・ガーランド、アルド・サンブレル、アリーブ・パーソンズ、ホセ・ルイス・キンキーラ、ヴィクター・イスラエル、クリスティーノ・アルモドバル、ジャン・ルフェーブル他。『ジキル博士とハイド氏』等のイギリスの作家ロバート・ルイス・スティーヴンソン（1850〜1894）の原作『宝島』を基に、ウォルフ・マンコウィッツとO・W・ジーヴスが脚色し、ハバート・フランク、アントニオ・マルゲリティとバウティスタ・デ・ラ・カーレが脚本を執筆。撮影はチェチリオ・パニアグア。

イギリスの港町で荒くれ者たちを相手に宿屋を営む母親と2人暮らしの冒険好きな少年ジム・ホーキンズ（バーフィールド）は、“一本足の男”を恐れる老船乗りビリー・ボーンズ（スタンダー）から死の間際に皮袋を渡される。やがて、海賊ピュー一味が宿屋を襲い、ジムが預かった皮袋の中味を見つけようと家の中を探し回るが、ジムは身を密めて彼らから逃れた。駆けつけた役人たちと共に、領主トレローニー（スレザック）の邸に行ったジムは、そこにいたリヴシー医師（ポーゾ）から、伝説の海賊フリント船長がどこかに莫大な財宝を残して死んだと聞かされる。皮袋の中には、その財宝のありかを示す島の地図が入っていた。リヴシー医師、トレローニーとその召使いたち、ジムを中心に、宝捜しの探険隊が即座に結成された。トレローニーは、酒場を経営するシルヴァー（ウェルズ）とその仲間たちを雇うことにしだが、彼こそがビリーの恐れていた“一本足の男”こと、海賊のロング・ジョン・シルヴァー船長だった……。日本では日本語吹替版で上映されており、日本語版監修は安西秀織が担当。元の脚本はオーソン・ウェルズが書いていたが、その後の改変が気に入らなかったウェルズはクレジット名を「O・W・ジーヴス」に変更するよう要求したという。スティーヴンソンの有名な原作は「宝島」(1934／監督：ヴィクター・フレミング、出演：ウォーレス・ビアリー、ジャッキー・クーパー、ライオネル・バリモア)や、ディズニー初の実写長編映画「宝島」(1950／監督：バイロン・ハスキン、出演：ボビー・ドリスコル、ロバート・ニュートン、ベイジル・シドニー)、舞台を宇宙に置き換えたディズニー・アニメ「トレジャー・プラネット」(2002／監督：ロン・クレメンツ、ジョン・マスカー、声の出演：ジョセフ・ゴードン＝レヴィット、エマ・トンプソン、パトリック・マクグーハン)等、何度も映画化されており、日本でアニメ化もされている。

音楽は、ピノ・ドナジオ作曲のスコアの編曲者・指揮者として知られるナターレ・マッサーラ（1942〜）。「Titoli di testa」は、ダイナミックなイントロからオーケストラとピアノによる大らかでヒロイックな主題、フルートによるドラマティックな主題、ジェントルでリリカルな主題へと展開するメインタイトル。「L'incubo di Jim」「La mappa」「I pirati attaccano la locanda」は、シンセサイザーを織り込んだサスペンス音楽。「La sorpresa del cane nero - La macchia nera」は、抑制されたサスペンス音楽。「Quindici uomini - coro」は、男声コーラスによる快活な曲。「Sognando l'isola」「Viaggio all'isola del tesoro」「Camminando nell'isola」は、メインタイトルに含まれるジェントルでリリカルな主題。「Cannocchiale - chitarra classica」「Porto di Bristol - chitarra classica」は、ギターをフィーチャーしたドラマティックな主題。「Una gamba - claviette」「Bandiera della tregua」「I pirati nel fortino - Lo scheletro」は、メインタイトルに含まれるドラマティックな主題。「Il barile di mele - Approdo」は、サスペンス調から後半メインの主題が大らかに盛り上がる。「Tre applausi per il capitano - La barcaccia」「La mano - Ben Gunn scompare」「La scialuppa」は、、ダイナミックなサスペンス音楽。「Signori a terra」「Il tesoro」は、不気味なタッチのサスペンス音楽。「I signori prendono in giro Silver」「Pezzi da otto」は、ジェントルでリリカルな曲。「Battaglia per la palizzata - Jim lascia il fortino」「Israel muore」は、ダイナミックなアクション音楽。「Porto dell'Hispaniola」は、大らかな主題。「Titoli di coda」も、メインの主題による大らかなエンディング。サスペンス調の部分はやや凡庸だが、親しみやすい主題は盟友ピノ・ドナジオの作風に通ずるものがある。一部、ロイ・バッド作曲の海賊映画「（未公開）スコットランドは死なず／戦場をかけぬけた男たち（Kidnapped）」(1971)に似た主題が登場するのは、テンプトラックに使われていたからかも。このスコアの初CD化（全27曲／約43分収録）で、500枚限定プレス。

ナターレ・マッサーラはミラノ音楽院（ジュゼッペ・ヴェルディ音楽院）で作曲と指揮を学び、29歳の時に初めて作曲したフィルムスコアが、この「宝島」だった。1976年にミラノ音楽院での学友だったピノ・ドナジオのアルバム「Certe volte…」の編曲を手がけ、同年にドナジオがブライアン・デ・パルマ監督の「キャリー」に作曲したスコアの編曲・指揮を手がけて以来、ドナジオの常連コラボレーターとして多数のスコアの編曲・指揮を担当している。1988年には、アルマンド・トロヴァヨーリ作曲の「（TV）ふたりの女（La ciociara）」の編曲も手がけているほか、作品数は多くないが、自ら映画やテレビ番組のスコアを作曲している。
