Growing up in a small town outside Albany, New York, Joe Kraemer was drawn to music early - an inclination that was fostered by his father, a computer programmer and musician who played and recorded songs at home. At age six Kraemer saw the film "Star Wars" with its score by John Williams, and immediately went home and began playing the music on piano by ear. He took piano lessons from a neighbor and played piano to his father's organ in church. His fate discovered him in the seventh grade, when he befriended senior Scott Storm - an aspiring filmmaker who went on to the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Storm (and his new friends and classmates Bryan Singer and Christopher McQuarrie) would return to Albany on weekends to shoot movies, and he enlisted Kraemer first as an actor and then as a composer. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied songwriting and film scoring. After graduation he followed the well-worn path to Hollywood, and found work in the movies as a sound editor. In 1997 he reunited with McQuarrie, who had recently won an Oscar for his "The Usual Suspects" script. He scored the NBC Pilot "The Underworld," which McQuarrie wrote and produced. That in turn led to him scoring the indie film "Burn," produced by Bryan Singer. Two years later McQuarrie made his directorial debut with "The Way of the Gun," a quirky, neo-noir thriller starring Ryan Phillippe and Benicio Del Toro. Kraemer and orchestra delivered a delightfully mysterious, castanet-salted score. From there he cultivated his skills in independent films and television - writing more than fifty scores for every genre from western ("Desolation Canyon") to comedy ("Monday"), mystery ("The Kidnapping") to documentary ("An Unreasonable Man").

2012年製作のアメリカ映画（日本初公開は2013年2月）。監督は「パブリック・アクセス」(1993)「ユージュアル・サスペクツ」(1995)「ワルキューレ」(2008)「ツーリスト」(2010)「ジャックと天空の巨人」(2013)等の脚本や「誘拐犯」(2000)の監督・脚本を手がけているクリストファー・マッカリー。出演はトム・クルーズ、ロザムンド・パイク、リチャード・ジェンキンス、デヴィッド・オイェロウォ、ヴェルナー・ヘルツォーク、ジェイ・コートニー、ヴラディミール・シゾフ、ジョセフ・シコラ、マイケル・レイモンド＝ジェームズ、アレクシア・ファスト、ジョシュ・ヘルマン、ジェームズ・マーティン・ケリー、ディラン・カスマン、デンヴァー・ミロード、ロバート・デュヴァル他。リー・チャイルドの原作『アウトロー（One Shot）』を基にクリストファー・マッカリーが脚本を執筆。撮影は「ライトスタッフ」(1983)「ナチュラル」(1984)「アンナと王様」(1999)等のキャレブ・デシャネル。ピッツバーグ近郊の川沿いで白昼公然と6発の銃弾が発射され、5人の男女が無作為に殺害される事件が発生。現場に残された証拠から、わずか1時間後に容疑者として元軍人のスナイパー、ジェームズ・バー（シコラ）が逮捕される。だがバーは殺人容疑を否認し、“ジャック・リーチャーを呼べ”と謎のメモを残した後、護送中に他の囚人たちに襲われ瀕死の重傷を負ってしまう。リーチャー（クルーズ）は元米軍の秘密捜査官で、今は街から街へと放浪を続ける一匹狼だった。警察がリーチャーの行方を掴めず途方に暮れているところに、突然リーチャー本人が現われ、やがてバーの弁護士ヘレン（パイク）に協力して事件を調べ始める。リーチャーは、証拠が揃いすぎていることに違和感を覚え、事件の背後に危険な陰謀の臭いを嗅ぎ取るが……。ロバート・デュヴァルがベテランのスナイパー役でいい味を出している。「アギーレ／神の怒り」(1972)「ノスフェラトゥ」(1978)「フィツカラルド」(1982)等の監督として知られるヴェルナー・ヘルツォークが冷淡な悪役を怪演。

音楽はクリストファー・マッカリーの初監督作である「誘拐犯」のスコアも手がけているジョー・クレイマー。「Main Title」は、静かに荘厳なイントロから重厚でダイナミックな主題へと展開するメインタイトル。「Who Is Jack Reacher?」は、静かにサスペンスフルなタッチ。「The Investigation」「Barr and Helen」「Farrier and the Zec」「The Riverwalk」「The Quarry Sequence」等は、抑制されたサスペンス音楽。「Helen's Story」は、静かにドラマティックな曲。「Evidence」は、重厚なサスペンス音楽。「Helen in Jeopardy」は、ジェントルな主題からサスペンス音楽へ。「Showdown」は、重厚でダイナミックなサスペンス音楽から後半荘厳な主題へ。「Finale & End Credits」は、オープニングと同様、静かに荘厳なタッチから重厚でダイナミックな主題へと展開するエンドクレジット。最後にボーナストラックとして重厚なサスペンス音楽「Prisoner Human Being」を収録。ジョー・クレイマー自ら90人編成のオーケストラを指揮した、バーナード・ハーマン調のダークなオーケストラル・スコア。監督のマッカリーは「エクソシスト」と「ダーティハリー」のスコアを参照するようにクレイマーに指示したらしく、70年代犯罪映画風のタッチが秀逸。

ジョー・クレイマーは6歳の時に見た「スター・ウォーズ」のジョン・ウィリアムスのスコアに感銘を受け、ボストンのバークリー・カレッジで映画音楽を学んだ。学生時代の友人スコット・ストームの紹介でブライアン・シンガー、クリストファー・マッカリーと一緒に学生映画を作り始め、彼らの初期の作品のスコアを担当。独立系映画やテレビ映画を中心に50作以上のスコアを手がけている。
